He finished school at Canyon High School in 1941.

In 1954 he was ordained as a Deacon in First Baptist Church, Canyon. He belonged to the Kiwanas Club and Chamber of Commerce.
He moved his family to Ruidoso, NM in 1983, and lived there until 2005. While in Ruidoso he was active in the Kiwanas Club, the Food Bank of Ruidoso and the First Baptist Church. When JoZach and Dorothy retired the family then moved back to Amarillo.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Walton Byrd.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; and his children, Ben Byrd and wife, Sally and daughter, Dettie; his brother, Roy N. Byrd and wife Katy; and also many nieces and nephews.
