Marletta Faye ‘Punky’ Sudbury, 83, of Amarillo, passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2017 in Amarillo.

Services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, June 24, 2017 at North Amarillo Church of Christ, 801 NE 15th, Amarillo, TX 79107, with ministers Glen Walton and Cecil Burch co-officiating.  Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St., Amarillo.

Marletta was born July 26, 1933 in Panhandle, Texas to Swift and Wenona Ingram. After her parents divorced, she lived with various relatives until her mom married J.B. Perry and they settled in Amarillo. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1951. On April 1, 1951, Marletta and Kenneth Sudbury eloped to New Mexico and married. They recently celebrated 66 years together.

During the 1950’s, Marletta raised her children and worked part-time in her step-father’s shoe store, Allen’s, on Polk Street. In 1960, she began a full-time job with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a drafting clerk, and, in the early 1970’s, was the first woman promoted to Field Engineer. She retired in 1986.

Marletta was a people-person. She loved her family, her friends, her coworkers and every child she ever met. She loved to laugh and had a great sense of humor. If anyone needed help, she did her best to meet those needs. In 1969, she and Kenneth took in four additional teenagers and finished raising them.

She could cook, sew, do needlework, knit and crochet. She made bread, took care of us when we were sick or needed a place to stay, cooked for funerals, hosted baby and wedding showers, gave blood regularly, sewed clothes and tennis racquet covers, knitted booties and crocheted baby blankets. She was there when her children had babies, helping out and even cleaning the refrigerator top to bottom!

She loved travel and camping with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father and sister, Nancy Vance.

Marletta is survived by her husband, Kenneth Sudbury of Amarillo; her three daughters, Mary Elizabeth McGinty and partner Ron Ostmann of Carbon, Texas, Lynn Anne Sudbury of North Richland Hills, Texas, and Bonnie Diane Broussard and husband Ricky of Beaumont, Texas; her son, Jim Bob Sudbury and wife Rhonda of Amarillo; 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; her sisters, Patty Unsell, Sherrill Guyette and Sheila Cheever; and many other loving family and friends.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 – 7:30 PM, Thursday, June 22, 2017.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) or North Amarillo Church of Christ in her memory.
