Jim was born in McKinney, Texas on July 21, 1947 to Lillie Mae Evans Flatt and Willie Flatt.  He was a graduate of Whitewright High School.  He spend the majority of his life in East Texas.  He attended college at Arlington State College as an engineering major while working at Texas Instruments.

He wore many hats during his 76 years.  He spent his early years as an auctioneer for several companies before working and retiring from Excel Machinery in 2014 as Purchasing Manager and Stockholder.  Jim enjoyed helping with the Soaring Pride Band (Canyon), building props for their marching seasons.  He loved watching the band perform, especially his youngest son, John.  Nothing gave him pleasure like doing things for other people.

Raising his two older sons, Brad and Daniel in East Texas, time was filled with deer hunting, traveling to deer leases in South Texas, and those Friday night lights!  He always recounted stories of his time with them and his pride outshined his pain.

During his years at Excel, business took him all over the world:  South Africa, Malasia, China, Australia, The Netherlands, to name a few.  While traveling the 48 states Jim always knew where home was and the “yee haw!” could always be heard from his passenger, John, in the back seat when they crossed the Texas state line!

Jim married Grace Martinez on September 9, 2000 in San Antonio, Texas.  They spent the next 23 years enjoying traveling, following the school band (call us”groupies”), being a part of Boy Scout Troop 31, watching his grandsons play sports for Happy High School, and attending family events.  He especially loved the Martinez Family reunions!

He is survived by his wife, Grace, son, John and fiancé Elvina Hernandez, daughter, Jaki, son Jason and wife Torre of Hutto, Texas, son Brad and wife Kristi of Happy, Texas, son Daniel and wife Jennifer of Frisco, Texas; Grandchildren: Bryant of Baltimore, MD, Reece, Sienna, Jaxon of Hutto, Texas, Kolby, Kolton and wife Brittney Flatt of Happy, Zack Flatt of Canyon, Dylan and Jason Flatt of Frisco, Texas, Great Grandsons:  Jentry, Jaylen, Judson of Tulia, Kopelynn, Brantlynn of Happy and many nieces, nephews, brother and sisters in law, dear friends and companions:  Willy, Mary Jane, Micaela, and Marissa Cruz of Canyon, Anna Hernandez of Canyon.

When Jim Worked for Excel and was traveling, he would call in and tell them “Don’t pay the ransom, I’m home!” He will be missed by those who loved him and by his girl Elli Mae (his dog).
