Adalberta "Berta" O. (Ovalle) Oviedo

Adalberta, “Berta” Oviedo, age 102, was called to her heavenly home on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, in Amarillo, Texas.

Public viewing will be on Sunday, November 5, 2023, from 12:30 until 7:00 PM at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia. The funeral mass will be on Monday, November 6, 2023, at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 4122 South Bonham. Additional services will be held at a later date in Raymondville, Texas; where she will be laid to rest alongside her husband and eldest son.

Berta was born in the state of San Luis Potosi, Mexico on April 23, 1921, to her parents, Quirino and Edubijes Moreno Ovalle.

Berta was the fifth out of eight siblings. She was raised on a small farm near the Hacienda de Bocas, state of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. On the farm, the family raised crops as well as domesticated animals such as egg-laying hens, cows, oxen, sheep, and goats. Tops of all was the majestic animal, the most beloved and admired horse.

In her days having a good horse would be today’s equivalent of having a new and flashy sports car. Berta was a skilled and talented rider who could at times outshine even the young men of the area, all while riding sidesaddle.

She always said that she had a wonderful childhood and would not trade it for anything in the world.

She adored and was adored by her family and was happiest when surrounded by her children and grandchildren. An avid reader, she would also compose stories and poems to share with her grandchildren.

Berta was a “Gold Star” mother. Known in the military community as one who has lost a loved one in service to our country.

Her son, Hijinio, was a proud member of the US Army 173rd Airborne Brigade who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War.

Her faith was strong, and she served in the Catholic Church for many years. As a young adult, Berta taught catechism and marriage preparation classes. She was a faithful parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church until her health prevented her from attending, and the church started administering in-home sacraments.

She was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband, Hipolito “Polo” Oviedo Sr., her two sons, Hijinio and Juan; her daughter Carmen, two brothers, Ignacio and Carmen, five sisters, Gregoria, Justina, Leandra, Desideria and Herlinda. Her son-in-law, Juan Alberto Cantu, and a great-grandson.

Berta is survived by her daughters, Angelita Oviedo-Johnson and husband Charles, Lourdes Oviedo Cantu, Teresa Oviedo Cruz and husband Trinidad, and Rosalinda Oviedo-Gomez and husband Rene; two sons, Polo Oviedo Jr and David Oviedo and wife Rachel.

Fourteen grandchildren; Dana, Brian, Melissa, David O., Marisol, Gina, Juan Daniel, Justin, Michael, Ricardo, Angelita Marie, Analisa Rene, David H., and Andrew P.; Twenty great-grandchildren plus one great-granddaughter on the way.
