Anthony “Tony” August Zmaila, 73, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away at home on July 6, 2026. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on May 27, 1953, Tony spent most of his life in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he built a remarkable career and an even more remarkable life.

Tony was a man of deep intellect, passionate about philosophy, teaching, sports, art, and Russian culture. His humor was quirky and dry, his mind endlessly curious, and his presence unforgettable. He saw the world through a lens of ideas, creativity, and compassion — and he helped others see it too.

During his years studying law abroad, Tony developed a profound connection to Russian culture. He immersed himself in the language, literature, and philosophy, becoming fluent in Russian and carrying that passion throughout his life. He loved sharing that knowledge with others, teaching informally and inspiring anyone who crossed his path to think more deeply.

Professionally, Tony dedicated more than four decades to the practice of law in Nevada. After earning both his Bachelor’s and Juris Doctor degrees from Saint Louis University, he began a distinguished career that included serving as General Counsel for the historic Dunes Hotels & Casino, practicing with respected firms such as Vargas & Bartlett, Santoro, Driggs, Walch, Kearney, Holly & Thompson, and ultimately leading his own practice, Anthony A. Zmaila Ltd. His work spanned litigation, business law, and bankruptcy, and he was repeatedly honored as a Super Lawyer for his excellence and integrity.

Tony was an active sponsor of the Amarillo Symphony, the Amarillo Little Theater and several animal rescue groups in and around Amarillo. He also did transport as pets were transferred from kill shelters to their forever homes.

Tony is survived by his loving wife, Pat Altstatt, whom he married on January 20, 2001; his beloved daughter Katrina Zmaila; and his three sons Sean Dietz, Joe Newman, and Carl Zmaila. He is also survived by his brother John Andrew Zmaila and his sisters Christy Ann Zmaila Benne and Sue Ellen Levermore. Tony leaves behind twelve grandchildren, with one grandchild preceding him in death.

Tony’s parents, Walter and Florence Zmaila, preceded him in death.

A celebration of Tony's life will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at 10 am in the Schooler Funeral Home's Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia.
