Audrey Jean Cannady Massingill passed Thursday, September 18, 2025.

Mrs. Massingill was born on 23 September 1941, in Belleville, Illinois, to Warren Ralph Cannady and Wilhelmina Adele Muskopf Cannady. After graduation from Belleville Township High School in 1959, Audrey worked for the Illinois Public Aid Department in East St. Louis, Illinois.

In 1959, Audrey married David Lee Coddington in St. Louis, Missouri. They lived in San Angelo, Texas, where their daughter, Debra Christine, was born. The couple later divorced.

In 1968, Audrey married James Evertt Massingill in San Angelo, Texas. During their marriage, the couple lived in Texas, Oklahoma, and Colorado, settling in Amarillo, Texas, in 1982.

Jim and Audrey enjoyed traveling. Their most memorable trips were a photo safari to East Africa and the Inca ruins in Peru. After Jim died, Audrey continued traveling in Europe and Canada. Her favorite solo trip was a river cruise in Russia.

Audrey was a secretary and worked for various types of occupations: lawyers, geologists, loan companies, oil companies, auto dealerships, vocational school. After her retirement she became an avid genealogist and self-published several books on her husband’s and her own families. She was a long-time member of The Amarillo (Texas) Genealogical Society and the St. Clair County (Illinois) Genealogical Society

Mrs. Massingill was a writer and had several stories published in various anthologies and magazines. She self-published several books of memoirs and other stories. She was a member of the Texas High Plains Writers for many years.

Mrs. Massingill was predeceased by her parents, her husband Jim, a daughter, Melba Dee Massingill Milholland, her dear friends Peggy Williamson Patty and Carleta Fernandes, and her first husband David Coddington. She is survived by her daughters: Debra Christine Coddington Ayala of Cortez, Colorado, Patricia Diane Lorentz of Ft. Pierce, Florida, Joyce Darlene (Johnnie) Kingston of Roscoe, Texas, and Sheryl Dene (Price) Baugh of Roscoe, Texas and grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

She also leaves an adopted aunt, Miss Martha Ann Johnson, a new arrival to Amarillo.

There will be no public service. Memorials may be made to your local animal shelter or the “24 Hours in the Canyon” cancer support group (Amarillo, TX) and/or the Harrington Cancer Center (Amarillo, TX).
