Bang was born in Shanghai, China on April 12, 1954. After graduating from Shanghai Second Medical University in 1982, he received a fellowship from the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at Pennsylvania State University and came to the United States to pursue a research doctoral degree in 1986. He welcomed his first child, Jessica, while he was a graduate student and teaching assistant there.

He received his Ph.D. in Physiology in 1992 and stayed at Pennsylvania State for a few years as a research fellow before accepting a research position at U.T. Southwestern Medical Center and moving to Irving, TX.

In 1996, he decided to return to his roots in medicine. He finished the first year of his residency at Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, before coming to Amarillo, TX to complete his residency at Texas Tech University Health Science Center. After welcoming his second child, Alex, he chose to make Amarillo his permanent home. He spent the next twenty years working at Amarillo’s VA Hospital as a physician, taking care of countless patients and helping to train future generations of young physicians, before finally retiring in 2021.

His greatest joy in life was watching his children grow up, and he regularly attended fiddle contests, violin and piano recitals, and swim meets. His hobbies included traveling and sightseeing; cultivating his rose garden; and bicycling and walking his dog, Oreo, around his neighborhood in Sleepy Hollow.

He is preceded in death by his father, Dexing Wan; and his brother, Peng Wan

Bang is survived by his daughter, Jessica Wan of Leander, TX; son, Alex Wan of Richardson, TX; sister, Hong Cullen of Murrieta, CA; and mother, Shouyue Pu of Murrieta, CA.
