It is with incredible sorrow that we announce that Billy Edward Penton passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at the age of 88.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Harvest Connexion, 4221 SW 45th Ave, Amarillo, TX 79109. The service will be led by Joshua Bullard.

Billy Edward Penton was born naked, and a baby, on December 23, 1936, in Bogalusa, Louisiana, to Alvin and Lena Penton. He was the youngest of six siblings. As a child, Billy enjoyed hunting, fishing, and, true to form, causing a little trouble.

While in school, he met a beautiful girl named Marilyn, and the two grew up close. Over time, their friendship blossomed into something more, and they got engaged on April 23. Billy and Marilyn were married on August 5, 1956. In 1962, they welcomed their first son, Billy Glynn. Four years later, in 1966, their second son, Rodney, was born.

Shortly after Rodney's birth, the family packed up and moved to Amarillo, where Billy joined his brother and began working at a printing press. He later took a job with Texas Sprinkler Company (TSC), where his dedication and work ethic quickly stood out. Billy and Marilyn eventually purchased TSC and successfully ran the business for many years. After selling it, Billy transitioned into a new role at Ewing Irrigation Supply, where he shattered sales records and left a lasting mark on the irrigation industry. His legacy in irrigation spanned more than 50 years.

He was a man of simple pleasures and strong opinions, especially when it came to lawns and sprinkler systems. Billy was known far and wide for giving helpful advice on irrigation, yard care, and life in general. He was always ready to lend a hand or help someone find a job, never asking for anything in return.

Even after retiring, Billy stayed busy. He loved traveling, woodworking, and what he called “piddlin’.” He had a soft spot for old Westerns, especially those on the GRIT channel, and enjoyed watching home restoration videos.

He and Marilyn were married for 52 years before she passed away in December 2008, building a joyful, strong, and deeply connected life together. Several years later, Billy found companionship again with his lifelong friend, Mary Lee. They were married in August 2015 and spent their years traveling the country, antiquing, and creating a life together on their land west of Amarillo. Their home became a cherished retreat for family and friends, filled with character, charm, and an appreciation for the simple things they loved most.

In his later years, Billy even jumped into the family lemonade business, working alongside his son Rodney. He quickly became a fan favorite, customers loved his humor and dedication. Always quick with a smile and a joke, Billy was a lemon-smashing machine, bringing the same work ethic and playful spirit to the stand that he carried throughout his life.

Billy is survived by his sons, Billy Glynn Penton of Dallas–Fort Worth, and Rodney Penton and his wife, Angela, of Hereford. He is also survived by his granddaughters Michelle, Maya, Kaci, and Jordynn; his grandsons Chandler and Jacob, nine great-grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his great granddaughter Jaedyn, and his great grandson Jonah.

Those who knew Billy will remember him for his playful spirit, goofy sense of humor, and the way he could always bring a smile to your face. He was a lovable troublemaker with a bright heart, always ready to lend a hand, crack a joke, or lighten the mood. His kindness, warmth, and energy made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. He was incredibly loved, and he loved us back.

The family would like to thank Billy’s friends and neighbors for their support in his final months, as well as his caregivers and BSA Southwest Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Billy’s honor to the Maverick Alumni Association or Boys Ranch.
