Charlene Marie Hughes, 87, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away on October 13, 2026, just three days after the passing of her beloved husband, Jerry.

Charlene was born on March 9, 1939, in Lockney, Texas, to Frank and Myrtle Messimer. She graduated from Lockney High School in 1957. On May 4, 1979, she married the love of her life, Mr. Jerry Layne Hughes, beginning a beautiful adventure of love, companionship, and treasured memories that would span more than 47 years. Their journey together continued until his passing on October 10, 2026, with Charlene joining him in eternal rest just three days later.

Charlene was a woman of remarkable creativity and talent. A gifted seamstress, she had a special ability to turn ordinary pieces of fabric into beautiful works of art. Whether sewing, creating intricate quilts, or lovingly crafting handmade dolls, Charlene poured her heart into everything she made. Her faith was the foundation of her life.

Charlene had a deep and abiding love for God and lived with the comforting assurance that she was deeply loved by Him in return. That faith was evident in the love she shared so freely with those around her.

Charlene and her Jerry enjoyed traveling together, especially their trips to Oklahoma and Branson, Missouri. Whether exploring new places or simply enjoying one another's company, they treasured the adventures they shared. At home, Charlene found great happiness working in her gardens.Blessed with a green thumb that many envied, she could nurture beautiful flowers and transform an ordinary patch of earth into a colorful display of God's handiwork.Yet, of all the things that brought Charlene joy, nothing compared to the happiness she found in her family. Her most cherished moments were those spent surrounded by the people she loved.

Charlene was preceded in death by her beloved husband; her parents, Frank and Myrtle Messimer; and her siblings, Viola Magnum, Betty Roberts, Ruby Reynolds, Clarence Messimer; her first husband and father of her children, David (Mickey) Lorell Gilbreath in 1979.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Tammy Word; her son, David Gilbreath and his wife, Sabrina; her ten grandchildren, Zadie, Tonia, Michelle, Michael, Tisha, Tanya, Brooke, Devan, David, and Amanda; and her many beloved great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
