Charlie Wayne Mestas, 53, of Amarillo, passed on the evening of September 13, surrounded by his father, mother, and brother.

Services are pending at this time.

He was born on January 28, 1973, to Charles and Florine Mestas in Roswell, New Mexico.

Charlie grew up in Amarillo, Texas. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School up to the 5th grade. He attended Bivins Elementary in the 6th grade, moving on to Austin Junior High School in his 7th, 8th, and 9th years. He graduated from Palo Duro High School with the Class of 1991.

Charlie participated in football, basketball, and baseball, Spanish Club, Key Club, and UIL Math Club. In addition, he was involved in Young Life, Catholic Youth Organization, Rotary Youth Leadership of America, and Who’s Who Among High School Students. He was nominated as a Youth Coordinator for the National Youth Conference in Washington, D.C., for Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Charlie was the recipient of the Amarillo Globe News Community Scholarship, which went to one graduating senior from each of the eight public high schools in the Amarillo/Canyon area, along with many other scholarships. He attended Amarillo College, receiving his associate degree.

Charlie married Celine Becker in 1995. They were blessed with a son, Caleb Mestas. They parted in marriage and remained friends for life.

Charlie later moved to Roswell for work and met Tammy Wingfield. They were blessed with a daughter, Mackenzie Mestas.

Charlie was employed by the USPS and Tyson.

Charlie is survived by his father, Charles; mother, Florine; brother, Scooter; son, Caleb; daughter, Mackenzie; and grandson, Braxton Mestas.

He was preceded in death by his loving companion, Tammy Wingfield, Grandparents, Emilo and Maxine Mestas, Abe and Pauline Montoya, O.D. Stephens, and Lucita Martinez, Uncles, David and Tommy Mestas, Abie and LeRoy Montoya, Andy Chavez, Jim Talley, and Manual Martinez, Aunts, Lupe Montoya, Rosella Padilla, Cippy Stiffler, and Lucinda Martinez; Cousins, Richard Garcia, Mark Montoya, Sharon Adolph, Patrick Martinez, and Keven Smith.

Charlie was full of life and smarts, fun, and always trying to entertain a group. Caring, he always greeted and left with a BIG hug and kiss on the cheek. As he grew older, his walk was not easy. He endured many trying situations. With the strength of Our Heavenly Father and love of Our Blessed Mother, he never showed pain in any circumstance. Our hearts are saddened by the passing of our son. He was deeply loved by his family.

The family of Charles Mestas extends a huge thank you to those who walked beside us through prayer, calls, texts, Mass offerings, flowers, and food. To Our Heavenly Father and Blessed Mother, we give thanks for watching over us and granting us strength and grace, knowing we were never forsaken during this dark trial.
