Charles was born on November 9, 1943, in Wolcott, Indiana, to David and Henrietta Dawson. Following his High School graduation, Charles enlisted in the United States Army, where he proudly served his country for 22 years before retiring with the rank of Staff Sergeant. During his time in the service, he served two overseas tours in Vietnam and another in Korea.
Charles had a big heart. He was a giving and caring man. He took care of everyone and never expected anything in return. Charles was always friendly and never met a stranger. On July 9, 2000, he married Jacqueline “Jackie” Gaitan in San Angelo, Texas. Together they spent 24 wonderful years by each other's side. Charles made a promise to Jackie that he would never leave her side for even a day until the Good Lord called him home; a promise he kept for their entire marriage, except for one day that was out of their control, which he spent the rest of his days apologizing for. His bonus grandkids were the apple of his eye and held a very special place in his heart, especially Jennifer Estrada and Edward Cervantez, who were very close to his heart.
When he had some spare time, Charles found pleasure in woodworking. He built several birdhouses and lawn chairs that he gave away. He enjoyed fishing and spending time in the outdoors. Even when confined to his power chair, Charles still moved around the neighborhood, helping his neighbors and collecting scrap wood for his numerous projects.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Charla. Those left to cherish his memories are his beloved wife, Jackie, Daughter, Leann Marie Dawson and Myra Robles and husband Ben, sons, Michael Dawson, Cipriano Garcia, and Oscar Garcia and wife Stephanie, sister, Margie Losh, his brother and sister in love, James and Eva Valles; godfather, Larry Estrada, and numerous grandchildren, bonus grandchildren, nieces and nephews; a special bonus granddaughter, Angela Garcia, and special niece Cassandra Alcanter, and his extended family and dear friends.
~Psalm 23~ a special Psalm that Charles recited daily during his tours overseas.
