Charles was born on September 15, 1941, in Amarillo, TX, to Charles “Chuck” Boswell Johnson II and Ruby Delores (Smith) Johnson. Charles was known to everyone as “Topper.”
Topper graduated from Amarillo High School in the 60s. He had many memories of Amarillo High, but one of his most heartfelt memories was of the school burning. Many would say he would tear up when talking about it and would cry at the site. He loved his Sandies. He was an avid athlete who loved all sports, but especially baseball. He continued to watch baseball and football throughout his life. Topper was a Texas Ranger fan and was so happy to see them win their first World Series game in 2023. He was an absolute fanatic over the Dallas Cowboys, as we all know. He watched every Cowboy game as they worked on making it to the Super Bowl for 2024.
Charles served in the US National Guard. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from West Texas State University. Soon after he graduated, he was employed with Pioneer Gas Co., now known as Atmos Energy. He worked for Atmos Energy in Amarillo for many years until he was transferred to Dallas. Topper worked for Atmos for 34 years before retiring in Flower Mound, Texas, where he lived with his wife, Angie.
Topper and Angie reside in Amarillo, TX. They both decided to move back in to be closer to family after his retirement. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening with his wife, Angie. If anyone knew Topper, they knew how much he loved his Country and was not afraid to tell you. He was a pragmatic, no-nonsense, meat-and-potato kind of guy. Those who knew Topper were aware of his outgoing nature, and because of that, he knew no stranger. The first "Man Hug" Topper ever got was from his brothers-in-law, David Oviedo and Beto Cantu. Charles will be missed by his family, friends, and probably a lot of strangers. He had a great love for his brothers and especially his mother. They got together every Sunday for a cup of coffee and a cigarette. The greatest love in his family was the Lord, Family, and Friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Boswell Johnson II and Ruby Delores Johnson.
Topper is survived by his wife of many loving years, Angelita Oviedo-Johnson of Amarillo. His daughter, Dana Rush, and husband, James Avery Rush III; son, Brian Clinton Johnson of Amarillo; Two brothers David Johnson and wife Wanda of North Richland Hills and Randy Johnson and wife, Jill, formerly of Austin, TX; three grandchildren USAF Captain Tarin Cavazos, and wife Dana of Oklahoma, Matthew James Cavazos and wife Katie of Aubrey, TX, and Canion Ruby Cavazos of Amarillo; two great-grandchildren Callaghan and Charlotte.
