Clara Slay, 92, of Amarillo passed peacefully on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 14200 Texas Plains Trail I-27, Amarillo, Texas 79119.
Clara Belle Slay was born to Charles and Nellie Darling on September 14, 1931, in Pampa, Texas.
Clara was a 1950 graduate of Pampa High School, where she played volleyball for 4 years and was co-captain her senior year. She graduated from West Texas State College in 1954 with a degree in education. She taught elementary physical education, spent many years substitute teaching, and was a teacher’s aide before retiring in 1981. She married James T. Slay Jr. June 7, 1955. Clara and James placed their membership with Washington Avenue Christian Church in October 1956.
Clara enjoyed the outdoors, physical activity, gardening, traveling with her husband James in their RV and playing with her grandsons when they were young. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels and then spent many years working with Washington Avenue Christian Church Family Service Center.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband James T. Slay Jr., brothers Charles and Amel Darling, sisters Dorothy Prather and Anna Mae Tussing, and daughter-in-law Karen Slay.
Those who cherish her memories include her daughter, Carol Denise Slay; son, James Temple "Jimmy" Slay III; son, Steven Nelson Slay; and his wife, Teri. She is also cherished by 4 grandsons: Jason, Jerod, Justin, Jesse and 1 great-grandson, Ander.
In leu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Washington Avenue Christian Church Family Service Center.
