Col (R) Jimmy Dale Cox

Col (R) Jimmy Dale Cox, age 82, of Amarillo, died peacefully on September 27, 2023, in Amarillo.

Military honors and burial at Arlington National Cemetery will be at a later date.

Jimmy was born to James Newton and Georgia Lee Sparks Cox in Lockney, Texas.  He graduated from Plainview High School in 1959, Texas Tech with a BBA in 1963, and Syracuse University with his MBA in 1970.

On May 30, 1969, in Newport News, Virginia, he married the beautiful Charlotte Ann Murdock.  Their love story would continue and grow for forty-two years until she died in 2011.

Col. Cox had quite an accomplished career in the US Army.  He served two tours of duty in Vietnam, one as a Commanding Officer.  He also served as Battalion Commander in Iskenderun, Turkey.  Other assignments included Ft. Eustis, Ft. Hood, the Congo, Ft. Monroe, the Philippines, Ft. Bliss at the Armed Forces Staff College, Pusan in South Korea, Ft. Leavenworth, the Pentagon, in Ogden, Utah, and at MacDill AFB.    He received many medals and awards, including the prestigious Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star with an Oak Leaf Cluster.

After retiring from the military, he accepted the position of ROTC instructor at Martinsville High School in Virginia.  Col. Cox was very proud that he continued in uniform for several more years.

His parents, a sister, Joy Gail Cox, and his wife, Charlotte Ann Cox, preceded him in death.

Col. Cox is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Cox Moreno and her husband Robert of Tucson, AZ; his three sons, Alan Cox and his wife Cindy of Amarillo; Carl Cox and his wife Rene of Bellville, OH, and Jimmy Cox Jr and his wife Robin of Bedford, VA; his sister, Pat Cox Wells and her husband David of Dallas, TX; his grandchildren, Logan Cox, Natalie Dugger, Adam Cox, Jamie Pirnie, Brian Moreno, and Alisha Moreno; his niece, Whitney Wagner; his nephews, Scott Shanhouse and Austin Shanhouse; his long time friend and colleague, LTC (R) Earl Harrison; and five great-grandchildren.
