Daniel Lee Greener (December 6, 1937 - May 30, 2025) passed away surrounded by friends and family in Amarillo, Texas which he frequently called a little piece of heaven.
Dan wore many hats in life -- Son to Beatrice Monica and Carl Joseph Greener of Jasper, Indiana, big brother to Bob, Margie, Jim, Jerry, Pat, and John; loving husband to Shirley, father to four, grandfather to 12, great grandfather to 9. He adored his wife of 67 years-- his high school sweetheart and college catch-- from the moment he picked her out of a crowd. Dan took great pride in his "four darling daughters," Angie, Danilee, Shelly, and Wendy. He taught them to "Study Hard, Play Hard, Pray Hard." He took fantastic trips with his family in tow and loved taking photos to document their adventures and gatherings. He was a St. Mary's High School of Phoenix leading basketball scorer and Arizona State University alum and fan, Delta Sigma Phi brother, grocery store director, Founding member of St Thomas Parish, and friend to so many. He enjoyed golfing and tennis and viewing anything with balls. His generosity, faithfulness and sense of humor will not be forgotten. He co-founded the Saturday Morning Breakfast Club where wise men gathered to solve world problems, gripe about sports, and share pictures of grandbabies. In addition to “Dad,” he was known by many other names-- Dan the Man, Mr. Fun, Captain Greener, Grampsie, Manners Man -- but his favorite title was always Gramps!
He spent some of the most cherished hours of his life as the beloved director of "Gramp Camp," spending summers of fun bonding and instilling character in his grandchildren. Summertime in Amarillo meant the pool, popsicles, S’mores, picnics in the park, climbing the backyard tree, catching fireflies, and meals with a smile on your face and a napkin in your lap! Most importantly, it meant reciting Gramps' "Rules for Success: Think, Plan Ahead, Use Common Sense, Be Consistent, Never Give Up, Love Everybody, and Have Fun!" These rules and the memories surrounding them will remain his legacy and will never leave the hearts of those who loved him.
Dan is preceded in death by his siblings Bob Greener, Jim Greener, and Pat Greener. He is survived by his wife Shirl Greener, siblings Margie Sohren, Jerome Greener (Dianne), and John Greener (Sheila), daughters Danilee Frigo (Dean), Shelly Blandford (Rick), Angie Gillette, and Wendy Robbins (Kyle), 12 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved fiercely.
