D’Ann Slaughter Moutos, 85, of Amarillo passed away on August 8, 2022.
A prayer service will be held on Monday August 15, 2022 from 6pm to 7pm in the Schooler Funeral Home’s Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday August 16, 2022 at 2pm at St. Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church with Rev. John Valdez presiding. Burial will be private.
D’Ann was born in Forth Worth, Texas on August 6, 1937 to John Edward and Beverly (Weeks) Slaughter. Following the family’s move to Amarillo, She began attending St. Mary’s Catholic School and also became a member of the St. Mary’s Church. After Jimmy and D’ann moved, they began attending St. Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church.
She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy and later would finish her education at West Texas State University. It was at West Texas State where she earned a BS in English and Speech Secondary Education, and MA in English and History. She was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English, Texas Council of Teachers of English, Panhandle Council of Teachers of English, and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was awarded Outstanding Secondary Teacher in Texas by the Texas Council Teachers of English in 1992 and her 35 years of service pin by Canyon ISD. Mrs. Moutos was also named Mentor/Teacher for Glencoe by McGraw-Hill Publishing Company. She was awarded a grant from the National Foundation of the Humanities and attended a seminar in Greek Tragedy at Stanford University. She also attended a seminar on Geoffrey Chaucer at Cambridge University. She also established the Advanced Placement program in Canyon ISD, where she was the Vertical AP Team Leader at Randall High School. She has been the English Department Chair at Canyon High, Randall High, and Ascension Academy. Following her retirement, D’Ann was inducted into the Randall Highs School Hall of Fame.
Aside from dedicating her life to education, D’Ann found the greatest pleasure in travelling abroad. She especially enjoyed trips to the United Kingdom where she spent the greatest amount of time exploring London.
D’Ann is preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Richard Slaughter. Those left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband Jimmy Moutos whom she married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on September 15, 1960, daughter Catherine Moutos, son John Moutos; sisters Sallie Wheeler and Nancy Slaughter, and brothers Steve Slaughter and wife Dianne and David Slaughter and spouse Jackie, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
In Lieu of Flowers, the family suggest a donation be made to the English Departments of Canyon ISD or Ascension Academy in honor of D’ann Slaughter Moutos.
