Denis Acker, 92, of Amarillo, Texas passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 in Amarillo.
Rosary will be held on Sunday, February 11, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 4122 S. Bonham. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, February 12, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amarillo, Texas, with Father Gabriel Garcia officiating. Burial will follow in Nazareth at Holy Family Cemetery at 2:30 pm, under the care of Schooler Funeral Home in Amarillo, 4100 S. Georgia.
Denis was born on February 27, 1931 in Nazareth, Texas to Philip and Gertrude Acker. When born, Denis weighed under one pound and grew up to be a six-foot-four tall man, with big hands and a bigger heart.
Denis graduated from Nazareth High School in 1949. He met the love of his life, Irene Schacher, and married November 21, 1953. They recently celebrated their 70th anniversary.
After high school, Denis took an electronics course with National Radio Institute. He went on to take a job with Amarillo Hardware and retired after 36 years.
Denis was active as a Boy Scout leader and volunteered many hours at St. Joseph Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and traveling all over the world. He also enjoyed woodworking making special keepsakes for his grandchildren. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Denis was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers Herman Acker, Paul Acker, Anthony Acker, David Acker; seven sisters Clara Kleman, Emma Kuper Moisier, Margaret Gallagher, Phyllis Podzemny, Doris Britten, Alice Acker, and Mary Acker. Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Irene Acker, daughter Cindy Eller and her husband, Kenneth Eller, daughter Andrea Birkhead and her husband, Dennis Birkhead, and son Bryan Acker and his wife Teresa Acker, along with 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that a donation in honor of Denis J. Acker be made to the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 4122 S. Bonham, Amarillo, TX 79110.
