Obituary of Donald Lowell "Trooper" Peters, Sr.

Donald Lowell "Trooper" Peters, Sr., born on March 16, 1934, received his final salute as he departed Ussery Roan Veteran’s Home on March 7, 2024. Trooper was born in Masterson, TX to A. J. and Clara Brinkman Peters. He dutifully served in the US Army in Korea from 1956 to 1959 and married Alby Kuehler in 1959.

Trooper's professional life revolved around various agricultural-related roles at S&C Grain, Moorman’s Feeds, and Sunray Co-op.  During his early retirement, he traveled cross country for Bill & Helen Piehl at Western Sales.

However, his true passion lay in his faith, family, and hobbies. Trooper dedicated countless hours to volunteering in Catholic church communities in Sunray and Amarillo, as well as serving as a Moore County 4-H leader.

One of Trooper’s enduring legacies is the all-purpose seasoning that originated in 1969 as a meat rub for Sunray Funday. Trooper Seasoning continues to be made and marketed in Farmers Markets in Amarillo, Wolfforth, and Waco. Trooper humorously noted that it is good on everything BUT ice cream.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Beldon Peters, sisters Genevra “Honey” Williamson, Marie Burns, and THE Bernadine DuLaney, as well as his father and mother-in-law, Albin “Shady” and Helen Kuehler.

Trooper is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alby, and their five children: Donnie & Amy Peters of Cooper, TX; Albin Peters of Stephenville, TX; Mary & Kerry Siders and Donna and L. D. Pugh, both of Levelland, TX; and Sam & Kim Peters of Boerne, TX. Their grandchildren include Amber & Justin Steward, Abby & Eric Leija, Rode Peters, Rowlen Peters, Rette Peters, Riley Siders, Nancy & Ross Parker, Paxton & Hannah Pugh, BaLeigh Pugh, Will Peters, and Emily Peters. They have ten great-grandchildren: Avery & Austin Steward; Aiden, Eva, Adaiah, Elliana Leija; Cash and Finley Parker; and Judson & Briggs Pugh.

Peters’ life and legacy will be celebrated with a rosary at 6 pm followed by a prayer vigil and visitation at 6:30 pm on Thursday, March 14, 2024 and a funeral mass on Friday, March 15, 2024 at 11 am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 4100 S Coulter St, Amarillo, TX.  Father John Valdez will be the celebrant.

A suggested memorial is the District 1 4-H Friends and Alumni Association, 6500 W Amarillo Blvd, Amarillo, TX 79106, as a grateful payback from the four generations of the Peters’ family which have benefited greatly from the Texas 4-H Program.
