Doris was born to Philip and Gertrude Acker on March 25, 1925, in Nazareth, Texas. She moved to Groom in the early 1940s, where she met the love of her life, Tom Britten. They were married on December 30, 1946, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Nazareth, and continued to live in Groom, where Doris worked alongside Tom to build their business and raise six children.
Doris was an active leader in church ministries. She served on the building committee for the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, directed the choir for many years, and was a member of the Christian Mothers, twice nominated for Diocesan Woman of the Year. She and Tom were instrumental in funding the current parish hall. Doris was known around Groom for her homemade bread, potato salad, and cherry cobbler. She loved dancing with Tom, attending her grandchildren’s recitals and events, and serving her community.
Doris moved to Amarillo in 2018 to the Park Central independent living community, where she developed a reputation for winning at dominoes and bingo.
She was preceded in death by her parents: husband Tom; 4 brothers; 5 sisters; daughter Diana Davenport; son-in-law Donny Williams; daughter-in-law Christina Britten; grandsons Tommy Williams and Brad Williams.
Doris is survived by five children: Janice Williams of Canyon, TX; Ron Britten of Cheyenne, WY; Patty Haner and husband Dale of Buda, TX; Sharon Wilhelm and husband Danny of Amarillo, TX; Connie Britten of Plano, TX; son-in-law Robert Davenport of Plano, TX; nine grandchildren: Julie, Chris, Lisa, Brian, Bob, Keith, Katie, Kara, Irina; eleven great-grandchildren: Claire, Garrett, Elise, Evan, Jeffrey, Kate, Alex, Michael, Kayleigh, Aidan, Thomas; and brother Denis Acker of Amarillo, TX.
Public viewing will be Thursday, November 16, 2023 from 8:30 am until 7:00 pm at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia in Amarillo. The rosary will be on Friday, November 17th at 6:00 PM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Groom, Texas. The funeral mass will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Groom, Texas.
