Dorothy Masten

Dorothy C. Masten, 83, of Canyon passed away, joining the Lord on December 9, 2020.

Rosary will be said at 6:00 p.m., Monday, December 14, 2020 at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 605 38th St., Canyon. Interment will follow in Dreamland Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home.

Dorothy was born September 6, 1937 at home in St. Francis to E.L. and Elizabeth Cranmer. The family moved to Conway then settled on a section of land south of Canyon in 1948 where they raised dairy cattle and wheat. Dorothy attended Canyon schools graduating in 1956. She continued her education at West Texas College where she met and married, John Wilks Masten in August 1958. She graduated with a B.B.A. in 1961. While John was teaching, Dorothy served as both substitute teacher and new mom in the Hartley and Gruver school districts before she returned to the Canyon-Amarillo area in 1968.

Dorothy served as secretary for various businesses and law firms including, McGlasson and Cox. She was secretary for the Administrator of Nursing at Amarillo College before joining the Texas Employment Commission where she worked in special programs such as JTPA, CETAQ then finally food stamps. She retired after 29 years of service. She often enjoyed long rides especially with a coca-cola in hand, in the country and relating the history of the area. Who lived where and what they did especially as kids and she truly loved her grand-dogs, especially Blue.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers, Walter and Edgar Cranmer; sister, Sharon McCarley; and nephew, Kenny Cranmer.

Dorothy is survived by daughter, Dr. Sandra Masten of the home; 2 sisters, Peggy Ferguson and husband, Jerry of Canyon and Leta Rolen and husband, Larry of Amarillo; 2 sister-in-laws, Janice and Linda Cranmer both of Canyon; and nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
