On June 19, 1926, in Clarksville (Country of Red River), Texas, Edward Eugene Owens was born to the late Henry and Addie Owens. He received his early education in the Julius Rosenwald–funded school system and later attended Cheatham High School. As an adult, he pursued further learning and earned multiple certifications from the Southern Baptist Seminary.
In 1945, Edward was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving honorably during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign.
Upon returning home from the war, Edward married his love, Marselena Young. Their 43-year union was blessed with four children and one “in love”: James Darnell Owens, Delbert Burnett Young, Lucretia Ann Owens, Joyce Evelyn Owens, and Rodney Marcelle Owens.
Several years after the passing of his first wife, Edward married Annie Faye Gassaway, with whom he shared more than 20 years of marriage. She preceded him in death. He is survived by her children, Tim Gassaway, Janice Balton, and Kelvin Gassaway, all of whom he loved as his own.
Edward was a devoted member of Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church of Amarillo, Texas. He worked as the shipping and receiving manager for Gunn Brothers Stamp Store for over 25 years and also operated his own janitorial and landscaping businesses.
Known affectionately as “Uncle Ed,” he was a husband, father, coach, and friend—a man who loved people. His warm smile and witty words could touch a heart and leave a lasting impression. He was devoted to his family and led by example.
