Gloria Jeanie Burney

August 27, 1946 — January 7, 2026

Amarillo

Gloria " Jeanie" Burney, 79, of Amarillo, passed peacefully with her family and friends at her side on January 7, 2026.

A mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Fr. Jim presiding.

Gloria was born on August 27, 1946, in St. Albans, Vermont. She graduated from Mt. St. Joseph's Academy in Rutland, Vermont. She married the love of her life, Clayton Howard Burney on September 1st, 1962. They had their one and only son, Nicholas John Burney on October 25, 1965.

She was employed as a cashier in Rutland, at The Big L for several years. The family decided to move to Amarillo in February of 1979. They boarded the Greyhound bus on February 11, 1979 and arrived in Amarillo on Valentine's Day. When they left Rutland Vt., the temperature was -10° and when they arrived in Amarillo it was a balmy 86°, a record that still stands today ( one of her favorite stories to tell).

She was a faithful Catholic and served her church community by volunteering whenever possible. She was active in St. Ann & Joachim Circle at St. Joseph's Catholic Church from 1979-1988. She then became active in the St. Faustina Circle. She was the treasurer of both circles as she enjoyed bookkeeping.

Since Roe V Wade in 1973, her passion and real calling in life was as a Pro-life Advocate. She helped run the Amarillo Right to Life Group for many years and then took over the entire group for the last 15 years. She maintained the booth every year at the fair and eagerly spoke to others about Pro Life. She was a member of the DCCW and the DCCW Texas Woman of the Year in 2022.

She worked at Wolf Office Equipment from 1979-1992. She began another career at the TDCJ, Bill Clements Unit in 1993 and then took an early retirement in 2011 to care for her beloved husband Clayton.

Gloria is preceded in death by her mom, Alice Coleman and Loving Husband, Clayton of 50 years, 3 brothers and a very special cousin, Carolyn. She is survived by her son, Nick, his wife of 37 years, Irma, granddaughter, Shelby and great-grandson, Scotty.

The family would like to extend a debt of gratitude to the Heritage Convalescent Home and BSA HOSPICE for the outstanding care she received in her short time with them.
