Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery.
He was born in Amarillo in 1951 to Curly and Ramona Allen. Family legend says that because of his January birthday, Herrick’s dad had to drive his mom to the hospital through a blizzard on the family tractor! He grew up in Amarillo, working with his dad and learning the construction trade. Herrick studied Agriculture at West Texas State University (now WTAMU), graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1974. Herrick was a craftsman, a builder, and a well-loved square dance caller. Herrick began creating and calling square dances when he was 16 years old and enjoyed traveling throughout the Texas panhandle, calling for different square dance clubs during his 50+ years of square dance calling.
Herrick met Bonnie Haiduk in 1973, and they quickly fell in love and started their new lives together, getting married on April 20, 1974, in Panhandle, TX. They had three sons, Ricky, Jimmy, and Stan, and six grandkids throughout their almost 50-year marriage. Bonnie and Herrick were active members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Amarillo for over 40 years, and they enjoyed singing in the Christmas choir each year. They loved to take their grandkids to the river to ride dune buggies and enjoyed camping and raising animals (the family had many different animals throughout the years, including rabbits, skunks, raccoons, and ferrets). Herrick was loving and kind and was seen as a father figure to many of the kids in his neighborhood. Herrick will always be remembered for his distinct, hardy laugh and the way that he was patient and kind to everyone he met.
Herrick was preceded in death by his parents, Curly and Romona Allen. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Allen; son Rick Allen and wife Lisa; son Jimmy Allen and fiancée Tram; son Stan Allen and wife Angie; grandkids Brandon, Breeahna, Ian, Lily, Lucca, and Kaleb; and his sisters Kathy Weick and Sharon Housh.
