Obituary

Janet Mae “Mother” Ambs, 87, of Amarillo, TX passed away on Thursday August 20, 2026.

Janet was born on January 26, 1939, in New Castle, Indiana to Ward and Louise Wisehart.

Janet grew up on her family farm in Indiana where she spent many years building a strong work ethic and tormenting her siblings with the assistance of her uncle John Richard Wisehart. She attended Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana and later went on to work for the Henry County Hospital in New Castle, Indiana. She continued her career at BSA Hospital after moving to Amarillo where she worked from 1970 to 2010. It was at BSA where she was lovingly known as, “Mother” to her co-workers and trained several surgeons along the way during this time.

She married James R. Ambs on October 19, 1963, and they celebrated 47 years together before James passed away in August of 2011.

Janet will be remembered by those closest to her for her dry, and witty sense of humor and love for a good card game with friends. Janet also enjoyed watching her beloved Indianapolis Colts and Indiana Hoosiers Basketball on TV. Her greatest joy was time spent with her family.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents Ward and Louise Wisehart, sister Nancy Acton, Uncle John Richard (Norma) Wisehart, and daughter-in-law Stacey Ambs. Those left to carry her memory are her brother Johnny (Wava) Wisehart of Moreland, Indiana, sister-in-law Su Simpson of Cicero, Indiana, daughter Theresa (Danny) Edwards of Green Bay, Wisconsin, son David (Lani) Ambs of Cabot, Arkansas, son Christopher (Tammy) Ambs of Amarillo, Texas, and son Thomas Ambs of Amarillo, Texas. Grandchildren include Zachary Keenan, The Reverend Tanner (Allie) Ambs, Madison (Dalton) Randall, Cory (Catelyn) Edwards, Becca (Jordan) Broadhurst, Dustin (Emily) Edwards, Joshua (Dr. Ashlee) Ambs, Mackenzie Ambs, Bradley (Sarah) Edwards, Dr. Jacob (Nicole) Ambs, and Emma Ambs. Great granddaughters include Stella, Madelyn, Nora, Lorelei, Jet, and Willa Jo. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
