Joe Schilling, age 93, of Amarillo, died May 5, 2026, in Amarillo.
A Vigil Service will be held Sunday, May 10, 2026, at 6:00 PM at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 4100 South Coulter. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, May 11, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the church. Entombment will follow at Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
Joe was born on August 20, 1932, in Slaton to Herman and Mary Kitten Schilling. He was the eighth of twelve children and was raised in Slaton. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1952 until 1954.
On October 4, 1960, Joe married the love of his life, Eunice Lee Buxkemper. Their marriage became a beautiful love story that spanned sixty-five years, until Eunice’s death in 2025. In 1961, the couple moved to Farwell where they began farming in Parmer County. Joe farmed alongside his sons for many years until his retirement and move to Amarillo in 1994.
A faithful servant of both God and community, Joe was a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus, the St. Thomas Men’s Club, Catholic Family Services, and St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. He gave generously of his time volunteering with Catholic Family Services, The Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels, and teaching Bible classes at the Clements Unit Prison. Joe had a special heart for those in need, often helping the homeless and installing air conditioning for less fortunate families.
Together, Joe and Eunice were honored with the Heart of the Samaritan Award, a reflection of the compassion and kindness they shared with others. Joe loved spreading cheer, encouragement, and God’s love to everyone he met, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, and generosity.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers; four sisters; and two sons, Nicholas and Trent Schilling.
Joe is survived by his children, Judith Tucker and husband Lane of Amarillo, Stephen Scholling and wife Karen of Farwell and Jason Schilling and wife Tami of Lubbock; sister, Jolene Walsh of Canyon; eight grandchildren, Russell (Brynna), Hunter (Cadie), Tyler (Justana), Dylan (Dakota), Trevor (Mary) and Garrett (Sydnee) and six great-grandchildren, Tatum, Collins, Haven, Ledger, Bodi and Grayson.
