John H. Ray Jr.

John H. Ray Jr, 88, of Amarillo died Saturday, October 15, 2022.

The family will receive guests on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 from 6pm to 7:30pm at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia in Amarillo. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2022 at 1pm at First Church of the Nazarene, 5201 S. Soncy. A graveside service will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Arrangements are in the care of Schooler Funeral Home of Amarillo.

John was born July 21, 1934, in Amarillo, the third of three children, to John H. and Birdie Alma Ray. John graduated from Amarillo High School in 1953. Following graduation, he attended Amarillo College and Wayland Baptist College. He served in the Texas National Guard, 36th Division, for thirteen years.

In 1954, he married Carol Yvonne Cook. They were married for 68 years and had one child, a son, John H. Ray Ill, who died in a tragic accident in July of 1994.

John retired in 1995 after 40 years with Atmos Energy Corp. He began his service in Amarillo with Pioneer Natural Gas Co. before transferring to Plainview where he was district manager of EnerGas Company He served in Amarillo as District Manager and transferred to Dallas where he was director of operations services for Atmos Energy Corporation. He served as president at Trans Louisiana Gas Co., a subsidiary of Atmos Energy Corporation in Lafayette, Louisiana before transferring to Lubbock where he retired in 1995.

In addition to his involvement in the gas industry, John served his community by being very involved in numerous civic organizations.

John was involved in civic service in the communities of Amarillo and Plainview. While in Plainview where he was district manager for Pioneer Natural Gas, community activities included president of the Plainview Breakfast Optimist CIub in 1970, president of the Texas Consumer Credit Association in 1975, president of the High Plains Children's Training Center in 1976, president of the Plainview Lions CIub in 1983 and president of the Plainview Salvation Army Board in 1983-84. He was very active in working as a Boy Scout leader with scouts from 1967 until 1988 and was inducted into the Haynes District Hall of Fame in February, 1997. He served as president of Louisiana Gas Association

John enjoyed golfing, sports and fishing.

John is preceded in death by his son, his parents, and sisters Devene Walker and Dorothy Black. Survivors include his wife, Carol, beloved four year old Bella, and many nieces and nephews.
