Myra Ann Kimmel Schmitt, age 84, of Amarillo, passed away March 29, 2026, in Amarillo.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 10, 2026, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, with burial following at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Myra was born in Blytheville, Arkansas, to her parents, Frank and Marcella Kreps Kimmel, on June 15, 1941. As a girl, she moved often, living in Oklahoma and Mississippi.
She was an accomplished horsewoman, a rodeo queen, and a standout basketball player at Mansfield High School and later at Texas Tech University, where Myra met the love of her life, Wayne Schmitt.
On January 29, 1966, she married Wayne Schmitt at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Amarillo. They were founding members of St. Thomas the Apostle Church. They had a love for travel and were fortunate enough to visit many countries throughout the world. They were devoted to one another through happiness and heartache for fifty-six years, until Wayne’s death in 2022.
For over thirty years, Myra worked at Sears, where she often labored nights and weekends and traveled to open new stores. After retiring from Sears in 1993, Myra and Wayne formed Southwest Sales Promotion, a specialty advertising company. Later retiring from SWSP, Myra became an avid golfer and developed lifelong friendships with many lady golfers. She was very competitive and loved playing in the Senior West Texas golf tournaments—winning many medals. Loved by all, she was famous for her witty one-liners.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Jennifer Leigh Schmitt, in 1991; and her husband, Wayne, in 2022.
Myra is survived by her daughter, Julia Sadowski, and husband, Derek Sadowski, of Salem, Oregon, and her two cherished grandsons, Sean and Max Sadowski, whom she loved spending time with.
The family suggests that memorials be made to either Boys Ranch or St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Myra’s memory.
