Maynette Loftus Scott, 84, of Amarillo, passed peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, May 22, 2025.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at Garden of Dreams, 2800 Randy Road.
Maynette was born in Amarillo, TX, on September 12, 1940. Shortly after birth, she was one of the first people to have an experimental, life-saving surgery to repair a stomach blockage. She spent most of her childhood in Pampa, TX, helping her mother and uncle run the family farm and ranch. She graduated from Pampa High School in 1958 before going to Texas Christian University, where she joined the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ballet with a minor in Speech & Literature in 1962. Maynette's pursuit of knowledge continued throughout her life, earning a welding certification and attending a variety of law and equine classes. Back in Amarillo after TCU, Maynette would go on a blind date with Bill Scott that would ultimately lead to their 60-year marriage, and she was the mother to two daughters, Michelle and Maria.
Dance was a lifelong passion, beginning at age six and continuing as a teacher throughout her life. A ballet specialist, she also loved tap and jazz. Highlights included starring as the Sugar Plum Fairy at age nine and performing in Chicago and New York City before high school graduation. She danced with Casa Mañana at TCU, the New York City Ballet, the Amarillo Civic Ballet, and other local Amarillo community programs. She participated in pageants, modeled, and taught modeling at the John Robert Powers School and Diane Dick International Modeling and Talent Agency.
Maynette was a mortgage secretary, co-owner of a dance studio, managed her inherited farm and ranch, and helped manage the family oil and gas company. She dedicated significant time to volunteering with organizations such as the Junior League of Amarillo, 4H, the Amarillo Little Theater, and created an after-school performing arts program.
Her golden years were spent transforming her Randall County property from a "plot of dirt" into a "green oasis" by planting 171 trees, building a koi pond that would require constant maintenance, and caring for her many animals. Maynette's adoration for animals was evident in her love for exotic animals, including a Chinese Goose named Tulose and a Peahen named Penny. She always had dogs by her side, cherished her Siamese cat Bleu, and deeply loved her childhood thoroughbred, Queenie.
Maynette is preceded in death by her grandmother, Mae Boone; parents, Walter J. Loftus and Azelle Boone Loftus; uncle, Hershall L. Boone; aunt, Maydelle Saunders Hoover; and cousin, James “Jimmy” Saunders.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 60 years, John W. "Bill" Scott; her daughters, Michelle Scott Mandell (Ed) and Anna Maria Scott; and her granddaughter, Zoey Mae Cortés. She is also remembered by her nephews, Lee Tabor Scott (Joan), Tol Warner Scott (Bernadette), Theron Mark Scott (Amie), and Frank Matthias Scott; and her grandnephews, William Tabor Scott and James Hunter, along with grandnieces, Lindsey Scott Welch, Cyrena Scott, and Julianne Christine Scott.
