Melba Faye Miller

May 24, 1917 — January 11, 2009

Mrs. Miller was born May 24, 1917 in Springer, NM to Ray and Ida Calliham. The Calliham family moved back to Conway while she was still a child.
She attended public schools in Conway, then received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at West Texas State College. She married Marvin Miller in 1938 in the Calliham home in Conway. She taught school for many years at Forest Hill and Margaret Wills Elementary schools. After receiving her Master’s degree, she served as a speech therapist in the Amarillo ISD until her retirement in 1978, when she and Marvin built a home in Panhandle.
She grew up attending the Conway Community church, where her parents were charter members. The origin and continued success of this church was a lifetime passion of her mother, Ida. Melba’s actions in helping to preserve, move and restore this little church paralleled and continued those of her mother in the early days. Melba was instrumental in the church’s salvation, as it had been declared a Texas historical site. The church became a part of the Carson County Square House Museum complex.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Heritage Convalescent Center for the love and care they gave to Melba for the last five years.
Melba was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, her parents, two sisters and one brother.
She is survived by her sons, Marvin Miller and wife Beverly of Kingsland, GA and David Miller and wife Suzi of Amarillo; her daughter Kay Burk and husband Charles of Conway; her grandchildren, Chris Miller and wife Bridget of Palm Desert, CA, Jeff Miller of Nashville, TN, Ali Miller of Amarillo, and Kirk Miller and wife Sheri of Austin; her great-grandchildren Ethan Miller of Palm Desert, CA, and Justin, Cole and Danielle Miller of Austin; her brothers Dr. Melvin Calliham and wife Frances of College Station, Tx and Max Calliham and wife Patty of Kansas City, KS, and one sister, Opal Herndon of Panhandle.
