Randy was born April 24, 1960, to Robert and Dorothy (Day) Essen in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He graduated high school in Alexandria MN in 1978. He enlisted in the Air Force but was honorably discharged after suffering a leg injury during boot camp training. Randy moved to Amarillo in his early twenties, where he made his home and became a proud Texan.
He worked in Records Management for Potter County for 33 years. It was here he developed many long- lasting friendships. Though he loved his job, he was starting to plan and think about how nice retirement was going to be. His plan was spending summers in Minnesota fishing and golfing, and heading south to the gulf in southern Texas for a couple months during the winter. He fell in love with the area after visiting his parents who spent their winters there.
Randy loved to stay active, especially with anything that involved being with people. He played on a seniors softball team. He created the Potter County Bowling League in 1997 where he served as secretary/treasurer. Randy enjoyed working in his yard or working on one of his many ongoing projects. He participated in quite a few Color and Zombie runs and enjoyed a good bike ride. In the years his son Robert was a Boy Scout Randy served as a Scout Master. He was an avid follower of the Texas Rangers and was able to attend a few of their games. Though he never had the opportunity to attend a Dallas Cowboys game he was loyal fan.
Randy was a devoted member of Trinity Fellowship Church and always welcomed an opportunity to help wherever and whenever needed. He believed in serving the Lord in whatever capacity he could. He was involved with the Men’s Club and enjoyed the camaraderie and events with this group.
Randy was predeceased by his father and grandparents. He is survived by his mother Dorothy, son Robert (Kassie) , brothers Rick (Deb), Scott (Carrie), and sisters Wendy and Cindy, aunts, uncles, nieces , nephews , many cousins, and the light of his life and his little buddy, grandson Ryder. Step-daughter Shyla, grandson Alex.
Randy will be remembered for his positive attitude and putting everyone else’s needs before his own, never letting on when he himself was facing challenges. He never wanted anyone to worry about him.
Randy’s life may have been cut short, but he touched the hearts of many and will not be forgotten.
