Robert Payne

Robert Dale Payne, 72, of Fritch, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2026. A man known for his hard work, vibrant personality, and deep love for his family, Robert leaves behind a legacy of dedication and warmth.

Viewing will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, from 9am to 5pm at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia in Amarillo. The family will receive guests from 5pm to 7pm.

Born on January 28, 1954, in Plainview, Texas, Robert grew up with a Texas-sized work ethic. From 1978 to 1986, he managed Lake McLellan, a role that connected him closely with his lake and motorcycle community. Driven by a desire to serve, he graduated from the Amarillo College Law Enforcement Academy in 1986 and began a dedicated career as a Deputy Sheriff in Miami, Texas, where he protected and served until 1992.

Never one to shy away from a new adventure, Robert later combined his love for good food and community by opening Bubba’s Bar-B-Que in Miami, Texas. For several years, he delighted locals with his own special barbecue recipes and signature sauce.

Following his successful stint as a restaurateur, Robert moved to Amarillo and transitioned into sales with the automotive industry. He spent the next 20 years working for Auto Sales and Finance. With his natural charm and integrity, he was regularly named "Salesman of the Month" throughout his two-decade tenure before happily retiring.

Outside of work, Robert lived life to the fullest. He was a die-hard, lifelong fan of the Dallas Cowboys, proudly collecting any and all Cowboys memorabilia he could find. He loved finding his rhythm on the dance floor and, above all else, cherished every moment spent with his beloved wife, Susie.

Robert was preceded in death by: Mother: Betty Franklin, and Brothers: Wayne Wells and Jimmy Franklin He is survived and lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 15 years: Susie Payne of Fritch, his children, daughter, Lawana Pulliam and husband Lynn of Amarillo; son, Bobby Payne and wife Kenna of Amarillo, his stepchildren: stepdaughter, Katie Mabry and husband David Denny of Canyon; stepson, Zachary Mabry of Lubbock; stepdaughter Ashlee Vasquez and husband John Vasquez of San Antonio area, stepbrother, Jay Kristl and wife Mary Menges, his brother: Dennis Wells of Enid, Oklahoma, and his legacy: 18 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and several loving nieces and nephews.
