November 11, 1942 — August 17, 2023

Amarillo

Sandy “Nanny” Mitchener, age 80, passed away in Amarillo on August 17, 2023.

Funeral services will be on Monday, August 21, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Schooler Funeral Home, Brentwood Chapel, 4100 South Georgia.  Chaplain Tami Lofgren will officiate. Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Michael Mitchener, Robbie Mitchener, Cory Mitchener, Eric Mitchener, Kenzie Martin and Jorge Ortega.

Sandy was born November 11, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, to Earl and Mary Jane Caffey Nixon. She graduated from Winfield high school in Kansas.
In December of 1960, she married Robert Lee Mitchener. Their love story would grow to include four children and last for the next fifty-seven years until Robert died in 2018.

The family was all that mattered to Sandy. She was devoted and committed to caring for them, which is a lot when you have a husband and four children; add to the fact that she cared for their disabled daughter, Becky, every day for fifty-one years.  Sandy was both present and attentive to her family and taught them the importance of strength, humor, and devotion to one another. Her warmth and kindness filled every room.

A highlight of Sandy’s life was Christmas time. She was joyful and wanted to share her childlike love of everything Christmas with all. Christmas lights and decorations were a big deal, and she got the entire family involved in spreading Christmas cheer; in fact, her home won several awards for its festive decorations. She loved sharing her love of Christmas with the entire community!

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Eddy Nixon; a grandson, Ryan Shane Martin; and her husband, Robert Lee Mitchener.

Sandy is survived by her two daughters, Kim Martin, and Becky Lynn Mitchener; her two sons, Bobby Mitchener and his wife Becky and Donnie Mitchener, all of Amarillo; two sisters, Margaret Harper and Joyce Dix; one brother, Neal Nixon; four grandchildren, Robbie, Michael, Kenzie and Cory; and seven great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Emmy, Gracie, Tynlee, Audrey, Parker, and Elias.
