Shirley Ann Armstrong Baze of Amarillo, 88, died on December 12, 2023. Services will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at 2:00 pm, in the Brentwood Chapel at Schooler Funeral Home, with Mr. Brett McCasland officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Schooler Funeral Home is handling arrangements at 4100 South Georgia St., Amarillo, Texas.
Shirley was born on March 27, 1935, in Phillips, Texas, to Marcus and Blanche Armstrong. She attended Phillips Elementary and Phillips High School, graduating in 1953.
She met Donald R. Baze from Idalou, Texas, while they were working in banks in Borger. Donald was working at the First National Bank, and she was working at the Panhandle State Bank. They were married in Borger on July 24, 1954, living there for several years before moving to Amarillo in 1960. Don died in November 1998.
Shirley worked many years in the insurance industry, and her last 11 ½ years prior to her retirement in December 1996, she was with HRH Insurance Company of Amarillo.
Shirley’s favorite hobby was bowling, and her friends and co-workers referred to her as “Ann” or “Annie B.” She was an active member of the Amarillo Women’s Bowling Association for 60 years, serving as President, Treasurer, and Director. She was awarded AWBA Woman of the Year in 1978, AWBA Life Member in 1982, and AWBA Hall of Fame in 1993. She enjoyed going to all of the bowling tournaments local, state, and national. She served the Association as a delegate to 11 state tournaments and 8 national tournaments. Her last and present bowling leagues were the Tuesday morning league called the Senior Morning Star League and the Thursday morning league called the Gay Gabbers Bowling League. She loved her many bowling friends.
Shirley was a charter member of the Church of Christ in the Colonies.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Don, her parents, Marcus and Blanche Ann Armstrong, and her only brother, Clytee Armstrong. Sisters Freda King, Barbara Pitcock, Kay Calhoun, Wanda Armstrong. Jeanette Eads, Betty Jo Armstrong, and Lodema Benton.
Those left to cherish her memory are her sister Cathy Mahler and her husband Ed of Wilmington, Delaware, and many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Viewing for Mrs. Baze will be Wednesday, December 20, from 8:30 am until 7:30 pm at Schooler Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials be made to the Heart Association, the Diabetic Association, and The Bridge Building Fund. Please sign our online guest register at www.schoolerfuneralhome.com
