Tommy Hughes

Tommy Ray Hughes, 82, of Amarillo, passed peacefully on June 24, 2024, at his home surrounded by family and friends.

The family will receive guests on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, from 6 PM to 7 PM at Lake Tanglewood Community Church, Fellowship Hall. A Celebration of life will be held at Lake Tanglewood Community Church, Fellowship Hall, at 2 PM on Thursday, June 27, with Pastor Jon Kohler and Dr. Ed Roach providing the eulogy. 

Tommy was born on February 1, 1942, at Saint Anthony’s Hospital, Amarillo, Texas, to Ernest and Ruth Rae Hughes (Williams). He attended Palo Duro High School, and then in 1960, Tommy became a proud member of the United States Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Reserves in 1967. 

In the early 60’s, Tommy started working for the Rock Island Railroad and then Burlington Northern (BNSF). He had a 42-year career working for the railroad, going from being a brakeman, conductor, engineer, and then management. Tommy married Melba Adams in 1961 and had two handsome sons, Todd and Heath Hughes. 

In 1987, he married Marsha Jones and got two bonus daughters, Stephanie and Caralee, whom he raised as his own. 

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Charles Harvey Hughes. 

Tommy is survived by his wife, Marsha; by his sons, Todd Hughes and his wife Carla and Heath Hughes and his wife, Donna; his daughters, Stephanie Miller and her husband, Richard, Caralee Hill; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Tommy and Marsha moved to Lake Tanglewood in 1998 and have made lifelong friends there. Tommy also loved to play golf, boat, and go on midnight cruises, but most of all, he loved being with his family.
