Walter Jim Burton

June 7, 1951 — April 5, 2009

Jim was born June 7, 1951, in Tucumcari, N.M. He came to live in Groom when he was in the seventh grade.
He married Donna Alward in 1973 in Claude. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church in 1976.
He was in business for himself for many years with Burton Construction and eventually came to work for Groom ISD.
Jim's greatest joy was helping his two daughters with everything they were involved in. From selling Girl Scout cookies to designing props for their Junior/Senior proms, he was the Daddy who was always right in the middle of the activity.
Jim's light shined the brightest when he was helping his girls, and many other kids, show their animals at junior livestock shows over the last 25 years. He had a way with animals and enjoyed taking care of them.
He loved the thrill of competition and passed that attribute on to many of the kids he helped, including his own. He had friends far and wide in the cattle industry and began Jimini Cattle Co. in 2000.
Survivors include his wife, Donna; two daughters, Melody Burton-Simpson of Boise, Idaho, and April Burton Jones and husband Brandon Jones of Amarillo; his parents, Allie and Norris Hoyt of Groom; a brother, Eugene of San Angelo; a sister, Jerry of Moore, Okla.; family by choice, Charles and Kay Burk and Scott McLaughlin and Justin Homen; and more friends than he ever knew he had.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
