Carlene Burk, 83, of Amarillo passed peacefully on October 4, 2025.
The family will receive guests on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia. Funeral services will take place at 2:00 pm on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at Paramount Baptist Church, 3801 S. Western, with Pastor Lance Herrington presiding. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Carlene was born Wanda Carlene Cox on July 24, 1942, in Dalhart, Texas to Gerald Leon and Maggie Cleo (Hanson) Cox. Following the family tradition, she began going by her middle name, Carlene, early on in life. She was a member of the inaugural Junior Class of Tascosa High School when it opened, graduating in the second class of the newly formed school just a year later in 1960. On August 19, 1961, she married her beloved husband Norman Lynn Burk at Paramount Baptist Church, where she and her family were founding and charter members. Together, Norman and Carlene invested their life in the church. Carlene loved her church and was very involved throughout her life. Carlene and her Sunday School group enjoyed lunches, dinners, movies, and helping out at the church wherever they were needed.
When not at the church, Carlene loved having her grandkids around. She cared for them and adored each of them in her own special way. They were the sparkle in her eye. Carlene also enjoyed sports. She was a lifelong fan of the Dallas Cowboys, win or lose. When Patrick Mahomes was drafted to the Kansas City Chiefs, she juggled her time between watching “her boys”, and Patrick Mahomes. She greatly enjoyed the Amarillo Sod Poodles, often attending games. And when she left the house, you could guarantee she would be dressed to the 9’s. Carlene was the epitome of elegance, always dressing to impress, even if it was just a trip to the supermarket.
Carlene was preceded in death by her parents and husband, and a brother, Bobby Cox. Those left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Shonda Gabel and Robert, son, Lance Burk, grandchildren, Breanna Estrada and Arron, Ayslinn Morris and Dylan, Landon Gabel, and Ledger Burk; and great-grandchildren, Jericho and Martin.
In lieu of flowers, the family recommends that a donation be made in honor of Carlene Burk to the Paramount Baptist Church Missions Fund, or Snack Paks 4 Kids.
