Wayne Rodger “Roddy” Dement, 89, died peacefully on September 10, 2024. A private family graveside service was held on September 20, 2024, at Llano Cemetery in Amarillo, Texas. The Reverend Chris Condit, Hillside Christian Church, Officiated.
Roddy was the son of Ivan M. Dement and Grace Avon Dement. He was born in Ector County (Odessa), Texas, on July 1, 1935. He grew up in Amarillo and attended Wilson Elementary School and Nixon Junior High School. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1953. He continued his education at Amarillo College, the University of Texas at Austin, and Texas Tech University. He remained an avid “Longhorns” fan.
In January 1957, Roddy married Carole Ann Cochran at St. Mary’s Church in Amarillo. They were married for seventeen years and had four children.
Roddy was employed by Ivan Dement, Inc., his father’s highway construction business. He earned his pilot’s license, hoping to add an airplane to the company.
He was enthusiastic about sports and loved fishing and spending time on the golf course. He won the Tascosa Country Club’s Men’s Championship Golf tournament one year. His lifelong favorite activity was chess, which he continued to enjoy on the internet. Roddy was a generous man who helped friends when possible.
Roddy was preceded in death by his infant son, Matthew Dement; his parents; his brother, Thomas Dale Dement; and a nephew, Gary Wayne Dement.
Roddy is survived by his three daughters, Michele Dement, Mary Christine Dement, and Allison Dement Pumphrey, and her husband, Jeff; two grandsons, Jeffrey Lane Pumphrey Jr. and Jacob Dement Pumphrey; a sister-in-law, JoAnn Dement; two nieces; and a great nephew.
