Wendon R. Smith died on July 2, 2026, in Amarillo, Texas.

A memorial service to honor his life and memory will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Schooler Funeral Home, Brentwood Chapel, 4100 South Georgia, Amarillo, Texas.

Wendon was born on December 27, 1947, in Crosbyton, Texas. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, an experience that reflected his deep sense of duty and commitment to others.

Throughout his life, Wendon was known as an exceptionally intelligent, focused, and organized man. He approached life with determination and was highly goal-oriented in all that he pursued. Yet beyond his accomplishments, those who knew him best will remember his wonderful sense of humor, his open-minded spirit, and the steadfast support he offered to his family and friends. He was a man people could depend upon, always willing to listen, encourage, and lend a helping hand.

Wendon devoted much of his professional life to serving others as a social worker with Child Protective Services for the State of Texas, a calling that required both compassion and strength. Even after his retirement, Wendon was not one to remain idle. He continued working as a bus driver until declining health no longer allowed him to do so.

Among the greatest blessings of his life were his grandchildren. Wendon absolutely adored them, and they brought immeasurable joy, laughter, and pride to his life. Time spent with his grandchildren became some of his most treasured moments.

Wendon was also previously a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he enjoyed fellowship and service alongside others who shared his values and faith.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Beth and stepfather, Albert Carr.

Wendon is survived by his wife Gloria; his daughter Elena Smith; his son Chris Smith and wifer Erica of Roswell, New Mexico; his sister, Marilyn Byars of Anton, Texas; a brother, Raymon Charles Carr of Lubbock, Texas; three grandchildren, Raven Rae Ann, Micah, and Jacob; and two great-grandchildren, Sailor Elizabeth and Porter Jack
