September 30, 1924 — February 1, 2020

Arthur Richard Britten of Groom, Texas passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at the age of 95.

A rosary is scheduled for 6:30 pm, Wednesday February 5th, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Groom, Texas.  A Mass of Christian Burial service will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday February 6th, with interment following Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Groom, Texas.  Funeral arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home.

Art was born on September 30, 1924 in Groom, Texas to John Mathias (J.M.) and Louise Britten and was the 9th of 14 children.  He graduated from Groom High School in 1942 and was a lifelong farmer.

Art married Jo Ann May on December 30, 1950, and the two celebrated 69 wedding anniversaries.  His life revolved around his Catholic faith and his 13 children, which he affectionately called his “Lucky 13.”  He was the definition of a patriarch to his entire family and leaves a legacy that is unrivaled.  He was a staple at daily Mass his entire life.  He enjoyed dancing with his wife, playing the organ memorizing hundreds of songs, and riding his bicycle around town visiting with his many friends.  He also had an uncanny ability to assign nicknames to almost every one he ever met.

Art was preceded in death by his daughter, Victoria Mae Britten.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Britten of Groom; children Dennis Britten of Clarendon, Texas; Mark Britten and wife Nancy of Amarillo, Texas; Matthew Britten of Coeur D'alene, Idaho; Nila Burgin and husband Donald of Amarillo, Texas; Clifton Britten and wife Susan of Groom, Texas; Rana Hardin of Leesburg, Virginia; Rita Poor and husband Ricky of White Deer, Texas; Monica Howard and husband Craig of Cisco, Texas; Ted Britten and wife Robynn of Amarillo, Texas; Jeff Britten and wife Jamie of Groom, Texas; Jack Britten and wife Lacy of Colleyville, Texas; Jay Britten and wife Norma of Andrews, Texas; 43 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, and six great, great grandchildren.
