Betty Louise Sherrer (Smith) Carey

Betty Louise Sherrer Carey, 92, of Amarillo went to be with her Heavenly Father August 12, 2022.

Burial services will be conducted by Schooler Funeral Home. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 17, 2022, from 6:00-7:30 PM at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia Street. Graveside services will be Thursday, August 18, 2022, at 10:00 AM at Llano Pantheon Mausoleum, 2900 S. Hayes Street, Amarillo, Texas with Rev. Stan Cosby officiating.

Betty Louise was born to William B. Smith and Mamie Bookout Smith July 27, 1930. She was born in Crowder, Oklahoma. Her mother passed away when Betty Louise was 5 years old. Her father married Faye Donaghe who became her stepmother. Not long after that her father passed away. Her stepmother remarried Adolphus Cooper and they became her parents and raised she and her siblings. In 1948 she moved to Amarillo, Texas. There she lived with her brother and his wife. It was during this time that she met Charles B. Sherrer. They were married April 16, 1949. They were blessed with two boys, Eddy Sherrer and Mike Sherrer. They became charter members of Kingswood Methodist Church, which was established in June 1959. Charles was killed in a car accident September 24, 1960. In 1961 Betty Louise met Gordon L. Carey and they were married December 20, 1961, at Kingswood Methodist Church. Gordon had two daughters, Debby Carey and Pam Carey. The two families blended and became one. Betty Louise stayed at home and she and Gordon raised their four kids. She went back to work after the kids had graduated from high school. She went to work for Amarillo ISD as a cafeteria manager. She managed cafeterias at Paramount Terrace Elementary School and Ridgecrest Elementary School. Upon her retirement she and Gordon enjoyed bus tours. They visited all parts of the country. She and Gordon were involved with Recycled Teens at Kingswood. Betty Louise ran the kitchen at the church and prepared many dinners and funeral meals. Her meals were always the talk of the church. Gordon preceded her in death June 22, 2009, after 47 years of marriage.

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepparents, brothers, and a sister. Her son, Eddy Sherrer, preceded her in death in 2019. Her son-in-law Lightnin' McDuff preceded her in death in 2018.

She is survived by her son, Mike Sherrer and wife Cheryl of Amarillo. Also surviving her are her daughters, Debby Carey of Amarillo, and Pam Tennison of Roanoke, Texas. Her daughter-in-law, Carol Sherrer of Amarillo, her grandchildren including Danielle Sherrer of Amarillo. John Tyler Sherrer and wife Natalie of North Richland Hills, Texas and their son, Harrison Michael Sherrer. April Carey of Amarillo. Leeman Tennison and wife Meredith and daughter Morgan of Arlington, Texas. Candace Orr and husband Heath of Waxahachie, Texas, and their children, Dawson, and Zoe. Brandyce Reese and husband Brad of Fort Worth, Texas. Travis Tennison and wife Amber of North Richland Hills, Texas and they are expecting their first child. Austin Tennison and wife Cortney of Keller, Texas and their children Ethan and Violet.

The Family would like to express their deepest appreciation and gratitude to the wonderful staff of Hillside Heights Nursing Home for the exceptional care that Betty received over the past 7 years.
