At that time, he also studied engineering at Wichita State University. When he came home on leave, he attended an Apostolic Faith revival service where he met LaVonna Webb. They were married on April 14, 1957 at her parents’ home in Guymon, Oklahoma. They returned to Wichita, Kansas, where their son, Kevin, was born in May, 1958, and lived there before being transferred to the Air Base in Amarillo. After serving four years in the Air Force, Don, LaVonna and Kevin made their home in Amarillo.

Don began his career as a draftsman for Missouri Valley. He continued his studies through correspondence courses at the University of Texas and became a Registered Professional Engineer with an emphasis in structural engineering. He was licensed in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, Louisiana and Pennsylvania. From Missouri Valley, Don worked at Southwestern Public Service and retired from Utility Engineering in 1997 as Manager of the Structural Engineering Department. During his career, he designed area power plants, including the Nichols, Harrington, Jones and Tolk Stations. Don also designed several Amarillo neighborhoods and churches throughout the region. After his retirement, he formed Mitchell Engineering and continued in that career path until 2015.

Don and LaVonna were faithful members of the Apostolic Faith Church where he served on the Church Board, was a Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. In the last several years he attended First Assembly of God Church in Amarillo. He was a man who truly loved and served the Lord, and was a Godly example to his family and those he came in contact with.
