James Robert Mayfield, born 1950 Christmas Eve, passed away on August 9, 2018. He was 67.
A visitation will be held from 6-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia St. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 16, 2018 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home.
James was a devoted Vietnam Veteran who proudly served the United States of America in the early ‘70’s on aircraft carrier, the USS Saratoga. Serving in the Gulf of Tonkin in Vietnam, he earned 4 outstanding medals: 1) the National Defense Service Medal, 2) the Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze star, 3) the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and 4) the Navy Commendation Medal.
James was a very successful owner/operator in the trucking business, having driven over 3 million miles with no accidents or violations and earning the title of Grand Master at United Petroleum Transportation (U.P.T.). His solid work ethic was unparalleled and yet he engaged with such ease and confidence, it felt safe and secure to be with him.
James loved working in his yard and watching birds, which he called a “simple life”. Family and friends alike will miss his friendly welcomes and his faithful “We’ll see y’all” goodbyes. If you feel a gentle breeze with strong gusts in between, you may remember his reminder to “just enjoy the day”. Always there to help others or to lend a hand, conscientious, dependable, faithful, and strong, James will be missed by everyone.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Darlene and father, James Mayfield.
James leaves behind 3 sisters, Vicky Daniels, Sherrie Jones, and Donna Blackman; 2 brothers, Richard Mayfield, and John Mayfield; 2 sons, Bobby Mayfield, and Justin Mayfield; 1 daughter, Carolyn Segovia; and forever friend, Gina Mayfield Werner.
