James Landon West

October 4, 1929 — June 22, 2017

James Landon West, age 87, formally of Plainview, died in Amarillo on June 22, 2017

The funeral service will be held on Monday at 10:00 AM at Hillside Christian Church West.  The Rev. Mike Nuthman and Dr. Fred Meeks of Plainview will officiate.  Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.

James was born October 4, 1929 in Cooke County to Charles and Mary Hazel West.   He married Norma Wagnon on January 20, 1954.  James also served in the United States Army.  He began working at a young age with Southwestern Bell first as a lineman and working his way up and retiring after forty two years as Public Relations Manager.

He and Norma were very involved and active in Plainview and loved to serve their community.  Together they volunteered for Meals on Wheels, while James also volunteered for Road to Recovery, YMCA and the Hale County Farm Museum.  He served as a past president of the United Way and in 1987 he was awarded “Man of the Year” for Plainview.   He devoted himself to serving God in the church as an usher for many years at First Baptist Church.  The children were always delighted to see James as he always had an endless supply of candy.

He was a multifaceted man that had many interest.  He loved to fish and golf but those things paled in comparison to the passion he held for his family and gardening.  Those two things went hand in hand, because of his love for his family he gardened and through gardening he showed love to them.  He cared for both with tender loving care; providing his family with a fresh natural bounty that nurtured both body and soul.

James was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jeannine Faulkner.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; four daughters, Linda Slone and her husband Keigm of Coppell; Beverly King and her husband Gary of San Antonio, Brenda Augustine and her husband Joe of Amarillo and Fanchon Hayes and her husband of Austin; two sons, David Landon West and his wife Tracey of Edmond, OK and Jerry Ferrell and his wife Deborah of Pampa; his sisters, Martha Welch and her husband Stanley  and Kathy Clark all of Whitesboro, TX; a brother Dean West and his wife Frances of Callisburg; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family suggest memorials be made to Hale County Meals on Wheels, 401 Mesa Cir, Plainview, TX 79072
