Lona "Yvetta" Broom

February 9, 1939 — March 11, 2021

Lona “Yvetta” Broom passed away on the morning of March 11, 2021 at her home surrounded by her family.

She is preceded in death by her father, Robert Edwards, her mother, Eunice Edwards, and her sisters, Viola Fickling and Marjorie Morgan.

Yvetta was born and raised in Portales, New Mexico on February 9, 1939. Born to two hearing impaired parents, she took deep pride in her family, often passing down treasured stories about her childhood to her children and grandchildren. Her first job was at Twin Cronnie’s Drive-In, serving hamburgers and milkshakes, her favorite meal. After graduating Portales High School in 1957, she started working as a secretary at V L Taylor, where she met the love of her life, Jack Broom.

Jack and Yvetta were married in 1958. They welcomed their first child, Ricky, in 1959, followed by their second son, Randy in 1963. As a mother, she was always putting her children first; pouring her love into them daily, bringing them up in faith, and being fiercely devoted to their happiness. She also made sure to share her love by cooking meals and taking her family to special lunches. Her biscuits and gravy, lasagna, and cinnamon chocolate cake were always on request. Faith and family were her greatest joys, and she was always heard expressing her gratitude towards the Lord for her many blessings.

For most of her adult life, she worked at Heath Furniture where she proved time and time again her devotion to hard work and keeping up with the latest advances in bookkeeping. Her work ethic carried over into her daily life. If somebody had a job to do, she would be the first one to lend a helping hand. She was also known to have compassion towards the homeless community; often picking up food and driving around to drop off meals to them. Her heart for giving was truly limitless and her loved ones will go forward carrying on her legacy.

Yvetta is survived by her loving husband, Jack Broom; her sons, Ricky Broom and wife, Kim; Randy Broom and wife, Brenda; her sister Daphine Lee; her granddaughters, Melissa Berg and husband, Jeremy; Diedra Troutman and husband; Mason; Misty Homen; Jodi Crow and husband, Casey; Malorie Zimmer and husband; Ryan; her grandsons, Jaron Broom; Dru Broom; Dustin Broom and wife, Ashley; Devon Broom and wife, Jill; Dustin Burnam and wife, Nikki; Justin Homen; Chris Homen; and her 18 great-grandchildren.
