Phyllis Dowell

Phyllis Erskine Gallatin Dowell, 92, of Amarillo died March 17, 2021.

Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home.

Phyllis was born December 26, 1928 in Grand Junction, CO to Harry and Mary Ellen Erskine. In 1948, she entered the Sisters of Charity in Leavenworth and became known as Sister Mary Theophane for the next 25 years. She worked at a number of schools in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Colorado and Montana teaching Religious Education.

In 1988, she met Charles Gallatin in Pecos, NM. They married and moved to Amarillo as she was hired at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the same field. Charles died in 1996. Phyllis then met Buddy Dowell at a bowling tournament and they married in 2001.

Phyllis enjoyed reading, crochet work, bible study, gardening, bowling and playing cards.

She is preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Charles; and second husband, Buddy.

Phyllis is survived by Charles Gallatin and wife, Diane and their children, Travis and Colby, David Gallatin, Randy Dowell and wife, Cynthia and their son, Andy; sister, Darlene Merryfield; brother, Leland Erskine; sister in law, Sister Rose Marie Gallatin ; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
